A Penchant for Podcasts

Three Podcasts That Will Change Your Commute

thank me later...

As a country girl, living in the big smoke, let's just say my feelings toward public transport have changed. There once was a time where I would get excited to get the train into the city or catch the ferry across the harbour. I know, country girl! Now, as public transport has become engrained in my daily routine, my love affair with the train is no longer *tear*. While I still enjoy gazing out the window watching as the world passes by, it's unusual for anyone to unstick their eyes from their screens and do the same. Don't get me wrong, I love a good scroll as much as the next person, but there is only so many memes you can tag your friends in before they block you on social media. So with that being said, I started expanding my bus entertainment - god only knows I could use some unplugging from social media.

I was a podcast novice before Serial, the phenomenon that took over our headphones and consumed almost all of my family's conversation. It was all 'He didn't do it... He couldn't have... It doesn't make sense.' However, once I finally succumbed to podcast peer pressure, I got sucked in. If you are into some intense 'who done it', then Serial hits the spot. It's engaging, intriguing and perhaps the most satisfying part of the podcast is host Sarah Koenig's soothing voice.

Now; if like me, you are interested in a more laid back, relaxed listening experience for your early morning commute, then the following picks will not disappoint. There is a running theme; they are all hosted by women (let's hear it for the girls!). A fabulous mix of useful life advice, relatable dating experiences and intensely engaging interviews with business women and go-gettersthey're everything you need for your commute!

At Home WithA podcast hosted by beauty and lifestyle bloggers Anna Newton and Lily Pebbles, who interview businesswomen and entrepreneurs in the beauty and social media worlds. I have been following both these women on their blogs for a few years. The podcast is engaging, well researched and casual enough it feels as though you are listening to a conversation with friends. The beauty of these two ladies is their ability to bounce off each other, they both have defined roles, their questions flow freely and their guests are comfortable talking in many different directions.

The content of the podcast varies depending on the guest, but overall the podcast series delivers very real, easy going and honest conversations. A bit of background for you- the girls (ha! I say like they're my mates!) go into the homes of professional women and as they move through different rooms; discuss career highlights, development of their style and key pointers for budding entrepreneurs and businesswomen. I honestly get a kick hearing how women who are now editors of major women's magazines, CEO's of beauty brands and creatives, start out in business (if only you could see my Cheshire cat grin just thinking about it). If you are looking for a podcast that delivers more than a mere babble, At Home With, is your go-to for that daily motivation.

Girlboss RadioThe baby of Girl Boss Media, founded by Sophia Amoruso (legend) Girlboss Radio is the opinionated and outspoken girl in your class, who won't stop until she's heard (she's pretty rad). It's vibrant, fiery and tackles a wide range of issues, some relevant to me, others not so much, but all engaging and crazy addictive to listen to. This podcast has been around for a while so I'm not completely up to date, but so far the podcast delivers a punchy, confident and no bullshit kinda vibe. It's focused on supporting, encouraging and promoting the success and stories of women in the media, business and creative industries. Girlboss Radio celebrates the movements of women and makes its listeners feel as though they are amongst the discussion. Is there a better listen on the way to work? Probably not!

Perhaps whats most refreshing about Girlboss Radio are its conversations about redefining success. We live in a world where success is all about money and status and almost never about who you are and how you connect with people. In a recent episode, Gwenyth Paltrow defined success in a way that resonated with me.

'Success to me is relationships that function really well. I think without relationships of quality, you are not a successful person'.

How true this statement really is. Girlboss Radio is all about instigating discussions and reflections. A discussion within its community and a reflection within the listener. If you want to challenge yourself, and listen to kick- ass #girlbosses then this podcast is for you!

The Heart of It This one is a newbie but a goodie. Only two episodes into the series, The Heart of It is already a winner in my books. Hosted by another blogger from the beauty world (do you sense a theme?) Estee Lalonde talks on topics of the heart. The Heart of It delves into the unique and personal experiences of its guests, the first episodes tackling tattoos and makeup. The first season is set up to be all about celebrating women. Estee Lalonde is insightful as she shares her personal experience with tattoos and her journey and relationship with makeup. She is charming and extremely likeable, which makes this podcast an easy but thoroughly enjoyable listen.
Despite being so new, I can already see this as one of my favourites.

All podcasts can be found in the iTunes store.
